Frequency distribution of host-range mutants among T2 phage infected bacteria.

چکیده
Phage. A plaque type mutant phage, T2 r tu, was used as a test bacteriophage. Its latent period and burst size, when incubated with Escherichia coli strain B cells in nutrient broth at 37 C, were about 20 min and 50, respectively. Host bacteria. Escherichia coli strain B was used as host. To select for host-range mutants, strain B/2 which is resistant to T2 was used. Techniques. Standard methods in phage work described by Adams (1950) were adopted. For basic medium, nutrient broth (pH 7.2) was used. Incubations were carried out at 37 C throughout the experiments. The details of the other experimental procedures will be described later.

Long-circulating bacteriophage as antibacterial agents.
The increased prevalence of multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens motivated us to attempt to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of bacteriophages. The therapeutic application of phages as antibacterial agents was impeded by several factors: (i) the failure to recognize the relatively narrow host range of phages; (ii) the presence of toxins in crude phage lysates; and (iii) a lack of appreciatio...
متن کاملAlteration of tail fiber protein gp38 enables T2 phage to infect Escherichia coli O157:H7.
Artificial control of phage specificity may contribute to practical applications, such as the therapeutic use of phages and the detection of bacteria by their specific phages. To change the specificity of phage infection, gene products (gp) 37 and 38, expressed at the tip of the long tail fiber of T2 phage, were exchanged with those of PP01 phage, an Escherichia coli O157:H7 specific phage. Hom...
متن کاملAllelic and Nonallelic Genes Controlling Host Specificity in a Bacteriophage.
ACTERIA infected with any two independently arising r (plaque type) B mutants of the bacterial virus T2H have been found, as a rule, to yield wild-type and double-mutant individuals among the viral progeny ( HERSHEY and ROTMAN 1948). This result has been interpreted in terms of recombination among nonallelic genetic-factors, and it is permissible to speak of the test in which bacteria are infec...
متن کاملVegetative compatibility, host range and pathogenicity of Verticillium dahliae isolates in Iran
Verticillium wilt is an economically important disease which inflicts serious losses in potato, cotton, alfalfa, some vegetable crops and fruit trees and occasionally ornamentals. Verticillium dahliae, infected cultivated species and weeds were collected from several areas in Iran during tewelve years from 1993-2005 and studied for their vegetative compatibility, host range and pathogenecity. T...
متن کاملProtein and nucleic acid relationships in Escherichia coli infected with phage T2.
In studying virus infections at the cellular level, it is worthwhile focussing attention on the initial stages when the course of the infection is determined. At least part of the virus enters the cell and brings about alterations of its metabolism, leading to multiplication of the infecting virus. In the case of phage T2, infecting Escherichia coli strain B, the host metabolism is directed exc...
